The gross salary of resident doctors has risen from 1929.52 euros to 2085.13 euros per month. Their supervision fees have also risen.
The salaries of resident doctors are linked to the minimum wage for doctors as established in a collective agreement in the field of health care. According to Urmas Lepner, the Vice Dean of Residency in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tartu, the salary system of the resident doctor programme in Estonia is financially motivating.
“There aren’t many European countries where resident doctors earn one-and-a-half times the average national wage,” he remarked. “Take Finland, for example: residents’ salaries there are equal to the average wage. And there are countries where their salaries are much lower. Latvian residents earn almost a third as much as ours do, for instance.”
Both the salaries of resident doctors and their supervision fees are funded from the state budget via the Ministry of Social Affairs. Supervision fees also rose on 1 April: whereas previously a supervisor earned 170.75 euros per resident, they are now earning 186.60 euros per month.
